Go Red!  Live Green!

Picture
The school wide theme this year is Go Red!  Live Green!  Our school will be working hard to learn about ways to develop a greener, more eco-friendly society.  Around the school are recycle bins and the school has moved to using metal silverware instead of plasticware which is thrown away.  This will be seen in the 8th grade hallway with participation in the Coastal Clean Up Days in St. Joseph, later tying into the H2O for Life project in which we work with another school in a foreign country to help provide people in a poor country access to clean water.  Check out last years project.

The Water Project

Picture
This year the 8th graders will be teaming up with the local Rotary Club for the Water Project.  The goal again is to raise $2,000 to supply in home water filtration systems to needy families in the Dominican Republic.  The water filtration systems are made locally in Grand Rapids, keeping our funds in Michigan while helping people abroad.

To fundraise, students will participate in the Family Meeting Half Court Basketball Shot, Hat/Pajama Day, Penny War, Best Buy Raffle, and Community Donations in Gallon Jug Containers.  Anything beyond the $2,000 will go towards local families in need.

Last year's H2O for Life project

Picture
In the month of December, all 8th graders participated in a Service Learning Project entitled H2O for Life (Help 2 Others). Lakeshore paired up with Idigima Secondary School, located in Idiwili, Mbeya, Tanzania. Simple solutions such as massive rain barrels, latrines, and a water pump create a safe source of water for the people of this area. Without these tools, the dropout rates increase because adolescents, especially young girls, spend their time collecting water from unsanitary rivers and streams, usually carrying water barrels that weigh around 35 pounds on average for several hours per day. Also, disease and casualty rates increase dramatically because of the lack of clean water and sanitation.

This project was a collaborative team effort planned by the Starz and eXtreme team teachers during their team time. Together, the staff created fundraising ideas and an interdisciplinary unit in which students studied the effects of poor water and sanitation in their core classes, environmental effects, and compared the African water table to Michigan’s. Students studied geographical features in Tanzania, along with colonization, government, and the slave trade. Students created persuasive promotional and fundraising materials, and they also figured out mathematical statistics regarding the global water crisis. The goal was to raise at least $1,500. After participating in a school wide Hat and/or Pajama Day, staff Jeans Day, an 8th grade Boys versus Girls Charity Basketball Game, a $100 Best Buy gift card raffle, an 8th grade Advisory Penny War, and donation jugs from area businesses, the students raised over $2,000 for the school in Tanzania.
