Edgar Allan Poe Facts

  • Poe's parents died when Poe was very young.
  • His relationship with his step-parents, particularly his father was very strained. 
  • Dropped out of University of Virginia due to excessive gambling debts.
  • Poe returned home to see the love of his life who was engaged to another man.  Her father sent a fake later from Poe to his daughter breaking it off.
  • Attended Westpoint Military Academy.  Later he was discharged from the Army and dropped out of there, too.
  • Later Poe married his cousin Virginia Clemm who died early in their marriage.
  • Poe's room number at the University of Virginia was 13.  The number of places he lived prior to joining the Army was 13.  The age of his wife when they married was 13.  
  • No one knows exactly how Poe died; however, cooping, an old form of voting fraud, is the most popular explanation.
